Telnet

Telnet is unencrypted

Telnet sends everything — including usernames and passwords — in plain text over the network. Use it only for legacy equipment on networks you trust, and use SSH everywhere you can.

When Telnet is the right tool

Some older network equipment, lab devices and embedded systems only speak Telnet. SigilTTY includes a Telnet client so those devices don’t need a separate app.

Connecting

1. Create a profile (or use Quick Connect) and choose Telnet as the connection type.
2. Enter host and port (Telnet’s default is 23).
3. Log in inside the terminal session, as the device expects.

Telnet sessions appear in the same tabs and session list as SSH sessions.
